Tracking Your Amazon Order
Amazon has built one of the most sophisticated package tracking systems of any retailer in the world. From the moment you place an order to the second it's delivered, Amazon gives you multiple ways to follow your shipment — including real-time map tracking when Amazon Logistics handles the delivery.
Method 1: Track via the Amazon Website
- Sign in to your Amazon account at amazon.com.
- Go to Returns & Orders in the top-right corner.
- Find the order you want to track and click Track Package.
- You'll see the current status, expected delivery date, and a full delivery timeline.
Method 2: Track via the Amazon App
The Amazon mobile app (available for iOS and Android) provides the richest tracking experience:
- Tap the Menu icon (three horizontal lines) and select Your Orders.
- Tap the order you want to track.
- Tap Track Package to see real-time status.
- When Amazon Logistics is delivering your package, you can see the driver's location on a live map along with a stop count ("Your package is 3 stops away").
Method 3: Email and Push Notifications
Amazon automatically sends email notifications at key shipping milestones. You can also enable push notifications in the Amazon app for even more timely updates. To customize your notification preferences:
- Go to Account & Lists → Account.
- Select Communication and content.
- Under Shipment updates via text, you can add a mobile number for SMS alerts.
Method 4: Ask Alexa
If you have an Amazon Echo device, simply say: "Alexa, where's my stuff?" Alexa will read out the latest status of your recent Amazon orders — a convenient option when your hands are full.
Understanding Who's Delivering Your Package
Amazon uses multiple carriers to fulfill deliveries. The carrier depends on your location, order type, and delivery speed:
| Carrier | Tracking Access |
|---|---|
| Amazon Logistics (AMZL) | Via Amazon app/website with live map |
| USPS | Via Amazon + usps.com with USPS tracking number |
| UPS | Via Amazon + ups.com with UPS tracking number |
| FedEx | Via Amazon + fedex.com with FedEx tracking number |
When a third-party carrier is used, Amazon's tracking page will display the carrier's tracking number. You can use that number directly on the carrier's website for more detailed tracking data.
What Amazon's Tracking Statuses Mean
- Order Placed: Your order was received but not yet processed.
- Preparing for Shipment: The item is being picked and packed at the fulfillment center.
- Shipped: The package has left the warehouse and is in transit.
- Out for Delivery: The package is on the delivery vehicle heading to you today.
- Delivered: The package was scanned as delivered to your address.
- Delivery Attempted: A delivery was tried but unsuccessful — check for a notice left at your door.
What to Do If Your Amazon Package Is Late
Amazon Prime orders come with guaranteed delivery dates. If your package is late:
- Check the tracking page for any delay messages or carrier exceptions.
- Wait until the end of the day listed as the delivery date — Amazon often delivers up to 10 PM.
- If the date has passed, go to Your Orders → Problem with Order → Shipment is late.
- Amazon will typically offer a refund on your Prime shipping or provide a credit.
Tips for Better Amazon Package Tracking
- Enable Amazon Hub Locker delivery for a secure, contactless pickup option.
- Use Amazon Day to consolidate multiple deliveries into a single day.
- Check your order's delivery instructions — sometimes packages are left in unexpected but safe spots per your saved preferences.
- Save the carrier tracking number separately in case you need to contact the carrier directly.
Amazon's tracking tools are among the best available, especially when Amazon Logistics delivers directly. Use the app for the most up-to-date information and don't hesitate to reach out to Amazon customer service if something doesn't look right.
